Vocalizing? What’s that? For
purposes of this discussion I use the term vocalizing to refer
to both singing and speaking, for the techniques of each are
based on the same principles. If a person has a hoarse or raspy
speaking voice it’s unlikely that they can switch over when
singing to the vocal techniques which produce a clear, strong
singing voice.
Why do you want good technique? Simply, it makes you better at
any vocal sounds you make. You’ll sing and speak effortlessly,
painlessly and fearlessly; fearlessly because good technique
builds confidence. You’ll have more range, dynamics and
endurance. You’ll communicate better because people will enjoy
hearing you.
Do these sound to you like goals worth attaining? If you think
they do, then here are some ideas to get you started. |

CARL’S TOP TEN
LIST FOR VOCALIZING:
1) |
Learn
breath control. Think long-term but start right away. Gaining
mastery over your diaphragm breathing is the primary building
block to strong vocal sounds.
2) |
Do
warm-ups for the voice and the body to aid looseness and
flexibility.
3) |
Eeeease into it. Vocalizing hard with no warm-up will make the
voice close up and the surrounding muscles stiffen.
4) |
Pay
attention to the physical sensations as you vocalize. Where do
you feel it? Is there pain or discomfort?
5) |
Open
up your mouth and let the sound come out. Give those vowel
sounds full play.
6) |
Be
aware of tension points in your body and consciously relax them.
7) |
Keep
your chin down in a natural, level position. Tipping the chin up
causes strain in the neck muscles, making everything more
difficult than it needs to be.
8) |
Conquer fear. Fear inhibits your ability to produce sound.
9) |
Remember, just because you aren’t able to make the kind of sound
you want right now doesn’t mean you should think you’re stuck
with that. Any bad technique can be replaced with a better one
through practice and thinking. Guaranteed.

Remember to have fun with it! Share the joy! Show the world what
you’ve got inside, baby! |
