AN AVERAGE GUY
(DIXON/DIXON)
Don’t put me on a pedestal or praise me to the sky
Can’t raise your expectations, I’m just your average
guy
Don’t make me jump through any hoops or set your
hopes too high
I’m not Mister Wonderful or Tom Terrific just your
average guy
I’m just your average guy doing what it takes to get
by
Just your average guy
The higher up the monkey goes the more you see his
rump
Going up to high in the air means coming down with a
bump boom
I’m just your average guy doing what it takes to get
by
Just your average guy
Don’t get that moonshine in your eyes tomorrow is
another day
When you may see that yesterday’s hero really has
feet of clay
Don’t put me on a pedestal or praise me to the sky
Can’t raise your expectations, Uh-uh I’m just your
average guy
Just an average guy, yeah I’m just an average guy no
expectations
There goes the monkey |

BEYOND THE OPEN DOOR
(DIXON)
Somebody was talking waking up from a bad dream
Somebody was walking out, looking for what they’d
lost
Somebody was praying things wouldn’t get crazy
Somebody was staying behind counting up the cost,
yeah yeah
You’d better try to find the laughter step out from
disaster
You’ll find what you are after beyond the open door
And if you feel like you’re fading, no time for
hesitating
Everything is waiting beyond the open door
Sometimes I hear voices saying don’t worry if it
don’t come easy
You’ve got to make choices but nothing seems to last
Need a soul revolution, ride off on a river of
changes
Don’t leave without saying goodbye then put it all
in the past yeah yeah
You’d better try to find the laughter step out from
disaster
You’ll find what you are after beyond the open door
And if you feel like you’re fading, no time for
hesitating
Everything is waiting beyond the open door
So come on and get up to the horizon
Don’t you just look around and wonder what you’re
doing here
We’ll take off and pray for a happy landing
We’ve got nothing to fear, I can see it all clear |

DON’T BUCKLE
(DIXON)
Somebody came and took her away today
And the lost little pretty ones don’t understand
what happened
Now we sift through the wreckage hoping to find some
clue
It’s so hard to accept when someone’s time has come
due
Don’t buckle from the strain it’s a powerful rain
But this storm like all the others must pass
Can’t get it from your head thinking what you should
have said
Staring at the raindrops breaking on the glass
Well a thing like this, it pulls you to your senses
Oh, we face mortality; look it straight in the eye
Makes you wanna blame yourself for everything that
happened
Makes you wanna shake heaven with your anguished cry
Don’t buckle from the strain it’s a powerful rain
But this storm like all the others must pass
Can’t get it from your head thinking what you should
have said
Staring at the raindrops breaking on the glass
I will ache in harmony with you my friend
Or I’ll be a shoulder and a soft voice if that’s
what you need
And we’ll drink to a memory all night long or until
we’re sure
that the demons have gone
Every man has his own way to grieve, you can count
on me
Don’t buckle from the strain it’s a powerful rain
But this storm like all the others must pass
Can’t get it from your head thinking what you should
have said
Staring at the raindrops breaking on the glass |

FAITHFUL (DIXON)
It’s not something that we’ve ever talked about
In fact it’s not for you as much as me
But darling rest easy if you’re mind’s in any doubt
‘cause faithful I will be, faithful I will be
I always took for granted that you understood didn’t
really think I had to say
But actions speak louder than my words ever could
and faithful I will stay
Faithful faithful oh, faithful I will stay
Faithful faithful oh, faithful I will stay
Still I know you’ll worry I’ll forget you while I’m
gone
And yes, I’m only human as you say
But being human means to me that I can live in love
with you
As if you’re there beside me when I’m far away
All you asked the day I left was to keep on thinking
of you
And faith is all it takes for love to be
Darling, if that’s what faithful means to you my
love
That’s what faithful means to me
Faithful faithful faithful I will be |

IT’S A WONDER
(DIXON)
There are words, I know there are, for what I’m
trying to tell you
But I’ll be damned if any come to mind
I have sat a long, long time trying to describe the
spell you put on me
The sparkle and the shine
Oh, it’s impossible to tell you feelings no amount
of learning can prepare you for
But if I’m lost for words it’s all your fault, the
way you make me tremble
It’s a wonder I can talk to you at all I only want
to call your name out loud
And I get so dizzy from you kissing me but nothing
in this world can make me stop
When I think of all the years it’s magic that you
waited
It feels like you were fated to be mine
I get so emotional I guess you’d call it greedy.
I want to have you with me all the time
Oh there’s some sorcery involved here that I won’t
even try to comprehend
But I do believe I understand the way you feel
beside me and
It’s a wonder I can let you go at all I only want to
fall into your arms
And I get so dizzy from you loving me but nothing in
this world could make me stop
Oh it’s a wonder I can talk to you at all I only
want to call your name out loud
And you’re lucky that you like me ‘cause I’m going
to be around you
for a long, long time |

LOST IN TIME
(DIXON-FRYBORT)
Nineteen years old, working in a restaurant
She said “I really love the Sixties. You could be
what you want
My mother talks about and I feel like I was there;
freaks and flower children with the starlight in
their hair.”
Nowadays I look around and wonder where they’ve
gone, but
When I hear the music there’s still freedom in those
songs.
Lost in time, where is my generation? How did they
leave me behind?
Lost in time, a fading memory, waiting for someone
to find me
Lost in time
The girl looked up at me with pleading in her eyes
She said “Was it really different then, and can you
tell me why?
Everything about those days just seems so cool to me
I’d love to have a time machine ‘cause that’s just
where I’d be.”
She so idealized this youth she never had
I wonder does our modern day really look so bad
Lost in time, where is my generation? How did they
leave me behind?
Lost in time, a fading memory, waiting for someone
to find me
Lost in time
She asked me “Was it really better?” I could only
hold my tongue
Let the wisdom of experience give way to the hope of
the young
Lost in time, where is my generation? How did they
leave me behind?
Lost in time, a fading memory, waiting for someone
to find me
Am I still so hard to find Lost in time |

MERCY
(DIXON)
Have mercy on the people in the street
Help them find a way to get back on their feet
Have mercy on those who would be free
Free to work and hope, living peacefully
Oh, have mercy, mercy on us all
Have mercy on us all
Have mercy on the downtrodden and the meek
Help them find their strength and a voice to speak
Have mercy on the woman and the man
Trying hard to raise their child and doing the best
they can
Oh, have mercy, mercy on us all
Have mercy on us all
Oh-oh, it’s not easy to understand what it all means
Have mercy. From this earth we must not roam
Like celestial gypsies in a search for our new home
Give me the wisdom to do all I can today
To help tomorrow’s children have a better place to
play
Oh, mercy. Mercy on us all
Have mercy on us all
Shower down your mercy like rain |

STITCHES, SUTURES &
STAPLES (DIXON)
Woke up one day in a peculiar situation, my love
smiling down like an angel over me
She said you’re hurt, you’re in a hospital No, no
don’t try to get up
You’ve been asleep now for nine days ‘cause you’re a
mess of injury
Thank God the worst is over We don’t know how you
survived
You’ve got to do exactly as you’re told now for us
to bring you back to life with all your
Stitches and sutures and staples It’s not the time
for your
Wishes and futures and fables look at all those
Stitches and sutures and staples and dream on
Imagine my surprise but there could be no other
explanation
For the poor broken body stretched before me on my
bed
So time went by and I cried and I got mad, and I got
crazy
And shadows on the wall started playing tricks in my
head
And for a time it seemed the only thing that was
holding me together
Was all the
Stitches and sutures and staples, this was no time
for my
Wishes and futures and fables, it’s all about those
Stitches and sutures and staples, so dream on
And it seems now that nothings ever going to be the
same
But isn’t change good for you?
Yeah, I’ve heard that too
And you’d think that I’d learn to leave well enough
alone
But maybe I’ve never understood, baby when I’ve got
it good
Until I'm crying, crying, crying
So one day in comes this card, a great big get-well
howd’ya do
And I opened it to see the message; now I'm sharing
it with you
It said Dear Carl: Sorry that you feel so bad. We
hope that this card
will bring you some happiness to make you feel
better
Lots of love from all your
Stitches and Sutures and Staples
Now get back to all your Wishes and futures and
fables
So long from all your stitches sutures and staples
Now move on |

THE POINT OF THIS LIFE
(DIXON)
There must be a guardian angel watching over me
‘Cause the universe sure smacked me down and it
could’ve ended badly
I lay there bemused and bewildered from the shock of
the fall,
which turned to amazement as good people rallied to
my distress call
All we are in this world is what we are to each
other
And love is the reason we help one another
And the point of this life is to get along
To make this world better before your time’s gone
Think of all you still have and not what you’ve lost
The point of this life is to get along and give it
all you’ve got
We get sidetracked with high expectations and
wrong-headed plans
We nod in agreement and just go along and give in to
endless demands
So what is the sense we can make of all this as we
shape-shift and stand on our heads?
Make time for living ‘cause one day it’ll come to an
end
And the point of this life is to get along
To make this world better before your time’s gone
Look at all you still have and not what you’ve lost
The point of this life is to get along and give it
all you’ve got
I’m not here to preach, it’s just something I’ve
learned and should tell
We all get our wake-ups and yeah, it can really be
hell
But when you’re going through hell don’t stop there
keep going
Reach out to your people and take strength in
knowing
That the point of this life is to get along
To make things a little better before your time’s
gone
Bring something to the party and share what you’ve
brought
The point of this life is to get along and give it
all you’ve got |

THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUN
(DIXON)
Steve-o said “that was the scene of the crime” as we
drove
past the church the other day
It may have seemed like a good idea at the time but
getting hitched didn’t quite work out that way
Yeah, I don’t really know why but I thought it would
be fun, fun, fun
Thought it would be fun
They say marry in haste, repent at leisure. All the
boy wanted was to
Extend the pleasure of her company; and so on bended
knee
He made a feverish proposal, didn’t think it through
Never stopped to wonder “Is she right for you?”
Everything going through his mind so fast Never was
a fool so determined to cast his fate like dice
If you ask him now why he did it; he’ll say I
thought it would be fun, fun, fun
Thought it would be fun
The hall was engaged and money was spent; the big
day came and the minister went
On droning in tedious tones “Bless you my children
and don’t throw stones”
The celebration after was oddly restrained,
everybody smiled politely
And made appropriate noises at the proper moments
but
Unbounded joy came only slightly
Nary a whoop or a holler stirred the whole
proceeding
Ask him now how the hell he got through it and he’ll
smile and tell you “good breeding”
That and I thought it would be fun, fun, fun Thought
it would be fu
Fun, fun, fun thought it would be fun
They carried it forward with predictable results; it
didn’t take long
Until the bloom was off the rose
They hadn’t finished being children when they had to
be adults
And there’s no fun in that as everybody knows
Steve-o’s rebounded and got a second wife, mostly
forgets about that previous life
And guess what? Now he’s having fun, fun, fun,
having lots of fun
Fun, fun fun, having lots of fun |

TREACHEROUS EMOTIONS
(DIXON)
I’ve got wicked emotions that take my head and give
it a spin
They don’t give a damn about the trouble they could
get me in
And with a woman like you I know they’re gonna do it
again
Oh, but where will it end? I don’t wanna depend on
Treacherous emotions keep ‘em under lock and key
Treacherous emotions alway get the better of me
I’m playing monkey in the middle ‘cause my heart
overpowers my head
It promises the pleasure but the pain keeps comin’
instead
Dangerous amusements, a love so slippery
Makin’ me a nervous man you don’t understand that
you’re making demands on
Treacherous emotions keep ‘em under lock and key
Treacherous emotions always get the better of me
So impulsive, need some time to think
These crazy feelings push me right to the brink
Quick to fill up; now look what I’ve done
All because I’m trying to have some fun
Treacherous emotions keep ‘em under lock and key
Treacherous emotions always get the better of me
You can’t trust ‘em |

YOU LOOK SO COOL
(DIXON/DIXON)
The snakes are hanging straight down from the trees
Monkeys are too hot to hunt for fleas
But I feel a breeze all ‘round my knees ‘cause you
look so cool
The sun’s a fried egg on a platter
The thermometer is ready to shatter
But my teeth all start to chatter ‘cause you look so
cool
How do you do it, it just isn’t fair
In the perishing heat you’re like a breath of fresh
air
While everybody’s hiding from the heat of the south
At high noon butter wouldn’t melt in your mouth
The lazy leopard and the old ocelot would change
spots with a Hottentot
But baby I’m all hot to trot ‘cause you look so cool
Gators are laid out in the swamp fireflies won’t
light up their lamp
But my forehead’s warm and damp while you look so
cool
How do you do it, it just isn’t fair
In the perishing heat you’re like a breath of fresh
air
While everybody’s hiding from the heat of the south
At high noon butter wouldn’t melt in your mouth
